Preparing Your Tax Documents

Tips to Get Organized
  • Gather all W-2s and 1099s (employers and clients must issue these by January 31st)
  • Collect receipts for deductible business expenses — meals, mileage, supplies, home office, etc.
  • Download year-end statements from investment and retirement accounts (1099-B, 1099-DIV, 1099-INT)
  • Have last year's tax return available for reference — it helps confirm deductions and carryovers
  • If you sold real estate or cryptocurrency, gather records showing purchase price and sale price
  • Track charitable donations — cash and non-cash contributions need documentation
  • For self-employed individuals: have a profit & loss statement or categorized expense records ready
  • If you pay estimated taxes, gather your records of quarterly payments to confirm proper credit
  • Keep all healthcare coverage records and any HSA contribution statements

How to Avoid Tax Scams

Protect Yourself Year-Round
  • The IRS will never call you to demand immediate payment or threaten arrest — hang up on these calls
  • The IRS always contacts you by mail first — be suspicious of emails or texts claiming to be the IRS
  • Never pay taxes with gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency — these are always scams
  • Be wary of "ghost" preparers — anyone who won't sign your return or provide a PTIN should be avoided
  • Protect your Social Security number — only share it with trusted, verified preparers
  • Watch for "too good to be true" refund promises — overstated deductions can result in IRS penalties for you
  • Use IRS Free File only through irs.gov — not through links sent in emails or texts
  • If you think your identity has been compromised, file IRS Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) promptly
